Smells like the holidays

This year is almost to an end. Holidays are upon us. We hope that everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving. Filled with love ones close at hand and food that filled your belly.

What's been happening with the association you ask? So far we have had another successful, fun and memorable Bowling Fundraiser. If you attended the event please email or upload your pictures and share your experiace.

We are also having a Christmas Party/Potluck coming up December 18,2010. If you would like to attend this event please contact your local SD Betisenian officer for more information. They will answer any questions you may have. We are also having a White Elephant gift exchange. Everyone attending is welcome to join in...what is White Elephant gift exchange you may ask?

Wikipedia definition....

Gifts are typically inexpensive, humorous items..in our event please bring a wrapped gift worth $10 (if your feeling generous you can spend more)

The most popular version of the White Elephant Rules allows any number of people to participate. However, the number of participants should be at least four for the game to be fun. Each participant is asked to bring a gift worth no more than a pre-agreed upon amount ($10).

Participants draw numbers from a hat/bowl to determine their gift choice order, starting with one, up to the total number of participants.

Each person takes a turn choosing a gift. The first person picks a gift, opens it and shows it to the rest of the company. Then the number two participant picks a gift and chooses to either unwrap it or to exchange it for the unwrapped gift. If the gift is exchanged, the person who had their gift taken from them gets to unwrap the chosen gift and then the turn passes.

When all the gifts have been opened, the game is over. Afterward, some trading should be expected and is perfectly acceptable so that, as much as possible, everyone goes home with a gift they are happy with.

Further rules and information will be provided at the party.

1st Ever Bowling Fundraiser

Our first ever Bowling Fundraiser held July 10, 2010. With about 190 attendees, this was a successful and memorable event. Families and friends enjoyed 2 hours of cosmic bowling, shoe rentals, and music for the price of $15.00. Supporters who purchased their tickets in advance got a discount. We would like to thank everyone who participated in every way to make this day possible. Events like these bring our community closer together and make lasting memories for our friends and families.

Participants were greeted with welcoming smiles by our members Lorna and Lingling (Pictured below)

Raffle tickets included for a door prize to win (Picture below)

From young and old everyone is welcome

Check out more pictures on our event slideshow from this event.

Daunan or All Souls Day

What makes our ancient town of Betis unique from anywhere else in the Philippines?

It's our tradition...

Did you know that during the dates of November 1 through November 10 we're the only town that celebrates Daunan or All Souls Day.

On All Saints’ Day (rather than on All Souls’ Day, the next day, which is really their day in the Catholic calendar), they visit the dead as if they have come back precisely to commune with them. They gather as families before their graves, bringing food, flowers, candles, and good cheer. Families reminisce about the times when they were among them. They thank them for their love and what they have done for them. They ask for their forgiveness and continuing guidance. Light a candle and the day is done.

While most people have stashed away leftover candles on All Saints'Day, the people of Betis have just started honoring their dead.

The event is marked by a noon time novena at the St. James the Apostle Church after which people would troop to the cemetery to light candles and pray for their dead loved ones. They would repeat this for nine days, faithfully observing a tradition that has long been in existence.

It is sad to say that the longest commemoration of All Souls' Day in Betis is facing the threat of being altered as younger generation are fast forgetting the traditions of the celebration and introducing their own version of "remembering the dead."

In one of the entrance of the graves their is a dictum inscribed on the portal of the cemetary: “Acu ngeni, ica bucas” roughly meaning "Me today, you tomorrow"
